Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is a red rash or red patches of the skin that is commonly found inside the folds of elbows, knees, hands, feet and cheeks. It develops due to a defective skin barrier and can be very uncomfortable.

What is it?

Eczema affects people of all ages and can appear anywhere on the body, although the most common locations include inside the folds of the elbows, knees, hands, feets and cheeks. It is often inherited and linked to allergic reactions. Eczema results in dry, flaky skin along with blisters or minute bumps, and in extreme cases, it may form agonizing cracks that can even bleed. While many individuals use the term eczema to denote their atopic dermatitis, eczema actually refers to a broader group of skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema, can impact virtually any part of the skin.

While eczema can also affect adults, it is prevalent in infants and toddlers, with rashes first appearing on their cheeks and chin. Those suffering from eczema face episodes where the rash is inflamed, itchy, uncomfortable, and painful, interspersed with periods of remission that can span weeks, months, or even years. Eczema is not contagious, but it is certainly no walk in the park. The team of board-certified dermatologists at Dermatologists of Greater Columbus can provide relief and offer treatments for eczema in the communities of Dublin, Columbus, Canal Winchester, Urbana, Circleville, Washington Courthouse, Grove City and Marysville, Ohio.

How is it treated?

While there may not be a definitive cure for eczema, certain topical products like petroleum jelly and moisturizers can often provide relief for this skin condition. However, without further medical intervention, many individuals find that their symptoms continue. Our professional team can accurately diagnose which of the 7 forms of eczema you might be suffering from and create a tailored skin care regimen, such as:

  • Individualized skin care protocol
  • Moist dressing treatment
  • Management of triggers to lessen outbreaks
  • Topical prescription medicines
  • Phototherapy
  • Systemic (body-wide) medication

Recent advancements by dermatologists and researchers have brought about new treatments designed to reduce, and in some cases, completely eradicate symptoms. If your condition has proven resistant to previous treatments, these innovative medications may offer the relief you seek. Start your path to comfort by arranging a consultation with one of esteemed providers in the Greater Columbus area.
