Skin infections can result from bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral causes that enter your body through a cut or open wound on your skin.
What is it?
Skin infections can range from mild irritation to severe disorders, depending on the nature and origin of the infection. Oftentimes, skin infections are a result of harmful bacteria entering the body through a cut or injury to the skin. Factors such as moisture, friction or inadequate blood supply to a particular body part can also contribute to an infection. Fortunately, the vast majority of skin infections are highly manageable. Those with compromised immune systems, whether due to underlying health issues, medication side effects, age, or skin folds from obesity, have a higher susceptibility to skin infections. Various types of skin infections exist, including bacterial (impetigo, boils), viral (shingles, warts), fungal (athlete's foot, ringworm) and parasitic (lice, bedbugs), and symptoms can vary based on the type of infection. Common signs include rashes, swelling, itching, and discomfort.
How is it treated?
For accurate diagnosis of a skin infection, it's important to seek the diagnosis of a board-certified dermatologist. Our medical team will carry out a physical examination, inquire about your symptoms and, if necessary, perform a skin culture to determine the kind of infection. Although many of these infections resolve themselves, in severe cases, our dermatology clinic can prescribe antibiotics, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic medicines.
Our board-certified dermatologists, serving the communities of Dublin, Columbus, Canal Winchester, Urbana, Circleville, Washington Courthouse, Grove City and Marysville, Ohio, are equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively treat any skin infection.
