Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis causes skin inflammation by speeding up the growth of skin cells due to immune system activity. It's important to note that it is not infectious and it doesn't transfer from one individual to another. Individuals with psoriasis mostly commonly have inflamed, red skin patches that are often overlaid with thick, silvery-white scales. These patches can cause itching, a burning sensation and general discomfort. It is also usual for the skin around these patches to be dry, which can result in cracking and bleeding. Individulas with psoriasis also note experiencing stiff and swollen joints.
Psoriasis is generally a chronic condition, with symptoms that can vary and are often cyclical, lasting for several days to weeks. Our board-certified dermatologists have years of experience treating psoriasis. How is it treated?
Though a confirmed cure is yet to be discovered, our dermatologists are able to manage your psoriasis through the use of topical treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids, ensuring your symptoms are kept under control. They may also recommend therapies such as salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids or even aloe vera. In certain circumstances, we may advise and provide light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. For more extreme instances, our dermatology clinic can prescribe oral or injectable drugs that assist in suppressing your immune system. During your consult, a board-certified dermatologist will be able to inspect your skin and create a treatment plan for your psoriasis that best suits your needs.
