Vitiligo

A chronic autoimmune disorder causing patches of skin to lose their pigment due to melanocytes (pigment-making cells) being attacked and destroyed.

What is it?

Vitiligo is a chronic condition that results in areas of skin losing their natural pigment and turning a light, almost white color. This is due to a deficiency in melanin, the skin's pigment. In simpler terms, some parts of your skin develop white areas known as macules or patches. Macules are smaller than five millimeters, while patches are five millimeters or larger. Some individuals with vitiligo also observe that their hair turns white in the affected areas. The condition usually manifests in individuals in their 20s, initially appearing on the face, arms, hands, or feet. Over time, the condition typically advances, with additional areas of skin losing their pigment. Vitiligo can occur in individuals of all skin colors, but lighter patches of skin are more apparent on darker or tanned skin tones.

At Dermatologists of Greater Columbus, we diagnose and treat vitiligo across a range of areas, from small, localized spots to widespread vitiligo affecting numerous parts of the body. With appropriate treatment, we have successfully restored skin color for numerous patients. If you have skin concerns, book an appointment at any of our locations in Dublin, Columbus, Canal Winchester, Urbana, Circleville, Washington Courthouse, Grove City, and Marysville, Ohio.

How is it treated?

Our approach to treating vitiligo is personalized, considering factors such as your age, overall health, the type and location of vitiligo and its progression rate. We offer a range of treatments, including medications, medicated creams, and light therapy, all aimed at restoring your skin's color. Additionally, we provide pigmentation therapy, laser therapy, skin graft surgery, cell transplant surgery, and camouflage therapy, administered by our experienced dermatologists at Dermatologists of Greater Columbus.

Treatment for vitiligo is a gradual process, and individualized care may be necessary for optimal results. Schedule a consultation at our office to begin your journey towards reclaiming your natural skin tone.
